If you are just starting out, getting hold of a good belly dancing video is a must, because there is nothing worse than turning up at your first lesson and feeling like a complete klutz! This type of experience may even put you off belly dancing for life as I have heard it said often a time and yet it is completely unnecessary when you could easily take in a little practise from the safety and comfort of your own home.
There are plenty of great belly dance dvd and videos out there to choose from, but sometimes the choice is overwhelming so I always prefer to go on a recommendation from a friend who has already tried one out. Perhaps they can even lend it to you first to see if:
a. The instruction/instructor in this belly dancing video is to your liking
b. Belly dancing is for you at all

I highly recommend taking up some belly dancing lessons locally also, because there is no comparison to the one on one instruction you will receive. Having someone who can tell you when you have the moves right and when you don’t will ensure faster learning and I don’t know about you, but I personally lose interest in things too quickly when I try doing them on my own. I find a weekly lesson with others who have a common interest is both a bonding experience as well as a social and learning experience all wrapped into one.
It is not the same for everyone though and many of you may just prefer to do your own thing with a belly dancing video at home alone or perhaps even invite a couple of friends to join you.
